Pubs and Bars
Here in York we have a wide range of pubs and bars,we famously have 365 pubs (one for everyday of the year!). With all these options it can be hard to pick where to go but we have compiled a list of some of the best places to go to suit all occasions. From cocktails to real cask ales we’ve got you covered.
1. The Ivy Brasserie.
Hidden in the cellars of The Grange Hotel is this beautiful bar. A quirky and atmospheric mix of melting candles and exposed brickwork with industrial lighting adding an edge to the proceedings. The bar also has live music every night from 7pm varying from jazz to soul, this is the perfect way to start your evening out.
2. Minster Inn
This is an Edwardian ale house serving cask ales in a traditional atmosphere. The bar is divided up into a couple of side rooms so you can relax in your own group or join with the patrons in the main bar. The pub also has a very unique ale yard that is fully enclosed and heated so you can enjoy some fresh Yorkshire air while sipping on your drink.
3. The Exhibition Hotel
Although this pub is based in central York it boasts the cities largest beer garden, so there is plenty of space to sit back and relax in the summer sun. Serving traditional cask ales in a long established setting this is a favourite of many local and once you’ve been you’ll understand why they keep coming back!
4. The Bootham Tavern
This contempory but traditional pub offers a variety of cask lagers by the bottle and cask ales on draught. The owners of the tavern have certainly breathed new life into this pub whilst keeping the original charm and quirkiness intact. As well as the traditional ales they also offer a wide range of beers and ciders from around the world .
5. The Hole in the Wall
Found next to one of the gates to the old city of York on High Petergate this traditional red-brick pub serves cask ale and hosts live music and quiz nights. This pub also has a very colourful past, a dungeon was discovered when the building was excavated and a tunnel underneath was bricked up by a superstitions builder after he claimed to hear eerie footsteps echoing in the darkness.
6. Guy Fawkes Inn
This Medieval inn stands in the shadow of York Minster and was the birthplace of the notorious plotter Guy Fawkes. The history that the walls of this pub holds is only enhanced as it is only lit by gas lamps and candlelight, this is a must visit for anybody wanting to experience the history of York.
7. Evil Eye
Don’t be put off by the name, this bar is anything but evil! Go through the gin shop and you’ll find a place to relax and socialise in this brightly painted bar and lounge. They specialise in cocktails, made with fresh ingredients and prepared by their well trained staff. They have an extensive menu with something to suit everybody.
8. House of The Trembling Madness
This quirky Medieval bar specialises in the on and off sales of quality alcoholic drinks. The bar is open day and night and stocks over 5,000 products, which is one of the widest range of craft ales in the UK. The bar also runs beer festivals so if your visit coincides with one be sure to make this a point of call.
9. Bobo Lobo Cocktail Bar
This is one of the premier cocktail bars in York. Serving classic cocktails such as the Cosmopolitan to more daring ones like the Zombie Bobo Lobo caters for every taste. They also offer cocktail mixology master classes for groups and can also host private parties with a DJ.
10. Bora Bora Cocktail Bar
Located in a courtyard hidden away from the main street you’d be forgiven for thinking you were actually sat in a beach side bar abroad. With lively salsa music and outside heating this is the kind of bar you could end up spending all night in. They serve all the classic cocktails and some twists at a very reasonable price.
